What do Harpo Marx, Sir
Laurence Olivier, Bob Hope and I have in common? We all had the
same harp teacher! She was a grand lady named Mildred Dilling.
Ms. Dilling was in her 80's when I worked with her at master
classes in Chicago and New York. She stressed musical
playfulness to make learning fun and release creativity, a
method I share with my students.
Sir Laurence Olivier and Bob
Hope took harp lessons? Yes, and you'd be surprised at how many
people from different walks of life learn to play harp. Some
want to become professional musicians, others seek relaxation or
a challenge to stimulate their minds. My students have ranged in
age from seven to seventy, girls and boys, men and women. They
play small celtic harps, mid-size student harps and grand
concert harps, learning everything from jazz to folk, new age
and classical music.
There are two opportunities
to take harp lessons from me. First, I teach privately in my
home studio in Madison near Hilldale Shopping Center. Contact me
about your skill level and musical interests, and we can discuss
whether lesson times are available and convenient. If not, I
might be able to refer you to another teacher.
Second, I teach at the
University
of Wisconsin School of Music in Madison. If you are
qualified, you can study undergraduate harp. I have courses for
university students who are either harp majors or non-music
majors.
